Intuition

We are all inherently intuitive. We’ve all experienced that sense of knowing something, knowing you should or shouldn’t do something and then NOT acting on it and kicking yourself for it afterwards. Or sensing someone was going to call and then they do, or having a “feeling” about someone that you can’t quite put your finger on, but it totally influences how you perceive them and interact with them. Intuition has many forms and is a subtle but powerful inner knowing that comes from beyond the thinking, rational mind. If you pay attention to your intuition, it can speak to you in really powerful ways that will benefit your path through life… for the good of yourself, as well as for others. Intuition is often a call to action, so learning how to recognise it within yourself, trust it, and act upon it, is a powerful tool you have for enhancing your journey through life.

When I was 20 I was embarking on my second overseas trip and I made a conscious decision to base all my decisions on my intuition. I’d already started experiencing intuition as a force within me, something that could guide and support me, so I wanted to see if I could expand the capacity I had to recognise and interpret it. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made… I have such a refined sense of intuition now: I recognise it, I totally trust it, and I’ve been able to direct and enhance my own life and offer wisdom and benefit to others, through connecting with this part of me.

Let me give you an example of how it can play out in your life: while I was studying, I decided that I wanted to work in a naturopathy clinic part time. It was an idea I had that I wasn’t really acting on (it wasn’t really the right time, as my youngest son wasn’t at school yet) but it was always there in the back of my mind that it’d be a good thing to do. One day I was listening to a podcast, and something that the presenter said suddenly made me think of a practitioner in NSW (I’m in Melbourne), and then I immediately thought “oh I should contact her.” So, without really thinking much about it, I sent an email asking if she happened to know of any good clinics in Melbourne that took on students for mentoring/work experience. It seemed a bit random, but I didn’t really think too much about it. The receptionist very kindly got back suggesting a few clinics that might be able to help.

The first one I chose, Fertile Ground, was one I hadn’t heard of and I decided I’d go there and say hello. When I rocked up, the friendliest receptionist I’ve ever encountered (thank you Sarah Harris!!) told me my timing was perfect as they were looking for a new student for their student mentoring program. I applied, was accepted and started straight away. At the end of the 3 months I was asked if there was any way I could stay on and join their team - and I got my part time job in a naturopathy clinic (in one of Melbourne’s best, no less)!!

So, by following up on an intuitive “hit” without discounting it with my rational mind (like: why would I contact someone in NSW about clinics in Melbourne? which would have been an obvious one), I was led to the manifestation of my desire. Also note that the timing was perfect - my timing at arriving in the clinic when an opportunity was available, and also because it coincided with my youngest son starting school. So, with minimal effort, I got the best result. And this is exactly how your intuition can work for you.

So, how do you connect to your intuition? One of the simplest ways you can develop this in yourself is simply to decide that you’re going to! Make a conscious decision to listen to your intuition and then keep that awareness about you as you go about your life. Intuition comes from out of nowhere, you get a “hit” of information from beyond your own mind, but often we doubt the message we’re getting and then our rational mind will come in and talk us out of it.

So, one of the best things you can do is to learn to quiet your mind. When you’re in a receptive state of mind it’s more likely you’ll notice your intuition, simply because the noise of the mind isn’t there to distract you, and your quiet state of mind may also help you to trust what you’re feeling and not discount it. Getting in nature and listening to nature sounds is a great way to calm your mind: stay alert, present, aware of the sounds about you as you gaze upon your surroundings and simultaneously notice your breath… this kind of practice done regularly, over time, will help promote a calm and quiet state in the mind, one that is receptive to perceiving subtle forms of information such as intuition.
